Pharmacovigilance, in layman’s terms is drug safety. It can be defined as the study and prevention of adverse effects caused by pharmaceutical products. Pharmacovigilance is the reason that many drugs are withdrawn from or not even brought into the market at times.

Courses

Candidates of pharmacovigilance can pursue both certificate and diploma courses.

  • The post graduate diploma programme in Pharmacovigilance is conducted by the Institute of Clinical Research, India. It is a one-year course that costs Rs. 1.3 lakhs.

Eligibility Criteria

In order to pursue a career in pharmacovigilance, the minimum eligibility criteria to apply for the course is:

  • A postgraduate or graduate degree in Bioscience/Life Sciences (with any of the following subjects: Botany, Zoology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Genetics, Biotech) with at least 50% marks in aggregate
  • A postgraduate or graduate degree with Chemistry as a subject with at least 50% marks in aggregate
  • A postgraduate or graduate degree in Pharmacy or Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • A postgraduate or graduate degree in Medicine

The selection process is based on merit. Admission is granted only to students who have cleared a written examination and a personal interview.

Duration & Venue

The number of admissions to each batch is limited, so that personal attention can be paid to each student, and this will also facilitate effective discussions, practical hands on training, and in conducting mini-workshops during the course of study.

Fees

The total fees for this 2 month course will be Rs.30,000 for working Indian Professionals and SAARC countries, and 1000 USD for other international students. The fees for Indian students pursuing higher education will be Rs.25,000.

The fees will cover all course materials and examinations. There will also be provision for coffee and lunch on teaching days.

Examination

At the end of each four month course students will be assessed on how well they have understood the course material. The pharmacovigilance exams will consist of:

  • A 2 hour written section consisting of 2 long questions and 4 short ones
  • A Viva: 30 minutes long with two examiners
  • A short project to be submitted at the end of the course on the topics to be given by the Faculty on Pharmacovigilance
